Director of Music Medical Leave Update: Donna Garzinsky will continue on medical leave into the new year as she recovers from surgery. We continue to hold her prayer. Wayne Dietterick has agreed to continue as interim choir director and principal organist. Linda Clark has agreed to continue as interim director of the handbell choir and recorder ensemble. We are extremely grateful to both Wayne and Linda for their willingness to serve during this time.

Churches Beyond Borders Joint Devotions: The Lutherans and Anglicans in the United States and Canada share a special relationship. Our four churches: Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and the Anglican Church in Canada, have produced a devotion for use from November 25–December 10 for the
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Copies are available in the narthex.

Advent begins November 28! We have LOTS of Advent events and resources: Advent Lessons & Carols, December 12, intergenerational Advent activities for children and adults, every Sunday in Advent at 9:00AM in Hinman Hall, and an online Advent calendar on our Facebook page, where we will post each day of Advent through Epiphany, recipes, memories, fun facts and more.

Advent Devotions and Advent Christmas brochures are available now.

Bridges Outreach: We will be preparing sustainable lunches to give to the homeless on Sunday, December 12, at 9:00 AM, and doing a run to Newark on Saturday, December 18. Keep an eye out for more information about what food items you can contribute.

Appalachia Service Project July 2–9, 2022 Update: Youth AND adults can still sign up for this awesome service opportunity. The need in Appalachia is so great, ASP is permitting some all-adults teams for the summer program usually geared to youth. This is a unique year and a great opportunity for adults to try ASP. SJSM Movie Night: Our next St. John’s Social Justice movie will be on Saturday, October 16. We’ll address the dual issues of climate change and income inequality by watching the 2012 film “Beasts of the Southern Wild, which is set in the Mississippi Delta.” We’ll gather starting at 6:30 PM, with the film set to start at 7:00 in the back parking lot (with Hinman Hall as backup in case of rain). In addition, we’d like to ask congregants to fill out this social justice survey.

Family Promise Volunteer Opportunity, September 19–26: St. John’s will be virtually hosting Family Promise families currently in temporary shelter apartments during COVID. Hurricane Relief: Hurricane Ida hit home, in more ways than one. Among the many impacted were three of our sister organizations: Family Promise of Union County, St. Stephan’s in Newark and Bethlehem New Orleans. Transforming White Privilege: NJ Synod will be offering a three-session training (via Zoom) to better identify, talk productively about, and address white privilege. This is an introductory experience designed to increase awareness of how white privilege operates.
