Boxes of Cereal for Loaves & Fishes: A traditional Lenten discipline is to give to those in need. We have been asked to collect boxed cereal for Loaves and Fishes. There are six Sundays from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, and we ask everyone to bring at least one box of cereal each week of Lent. Can we collect 300+ boxes?

Easter Flowers: We are collecting donations for Easter flowers; suggested donations of $25–50 All dedications must be received by April 3. Sign up in the entryway.

Let Us Build a House–Bethlehem Build: Our partner congregation, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, New Orleans, is building new affordable housing rentals on their property in partnership with Tulane University. Our Council has challenged St. John's to raise $22,500, or 10% of the needed funds to make this project possible during Lent. Give online or by check payable to St. John’s with “Bethlehem Build” in the memo line.

Fun WALK/RUN with Lutheran Social Ministries of NJ on March 26 to fill food pantries across New Jersey. The Fun Walk/Run will be at the South County Mountain Recreation Complex across from the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange. Visit the LSMNJ website to register.

African American Museum Tour/Mask & Wig Club Tour, April 2: As part of the Jehu Jones Bishop’s Challenge, visit two museums in Philadelphia, the African American Museum and the Mask & Wig Club, originally built by the Rev. Jehu Jones as the first African American Lutheran Church in the U.S. Cost is $25 for bus and museum ticket. Lunch is on your own. If traveling on your own you will still need to sign up for your museum ticket ($9). Register by March 25 (see weekly email for link).

MLK Event TODAY at 7:00 PM: A discussion of the film, Ferguson Rises. Michael Brown Jr., an 18-year-old black man, was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. His murder and the City’s reaction to the protests that followed exposed the searing inequalities that still exust. Click on this link to register to watch both the documentary and panel discussion. First Sunday after Christmas

A busy weekend lies ahead! First, in winter’s deepest night, we welcome the light of the Christ child. Isaiah declares that the light of the long-promised king will illumine the world and bring endless peace and justice. Paul reminds us that the grace of God through Jesus Christ brings salvation to all people. The angels declare that Jesus’ birth is good and joyful news for everyone, including lowly shepherds. Filled with the light that shines in our lives, we go forth to share the light of Christ with the whole world.

On the first Sunday of Christmas, we return to the house of God “to sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God,” who has gifted us with a savior. As the festival continues, “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” It is Christmas, still.

COVID Christmas Precautions

With the rise in cases of COVID, we have made some additional precautions for our Christmas services. We are glad we are able to have in-person Christmas services this year; and for the love of each other, we will abide by these precautions as Christian community.

• Everyone MUST wear a mask arriving, during, and leaving worship. There can be no exceptions. You must wear a mask properly covering your nose and mouth. We have been told by medical professionals this is the single best thing we can all do to keep ourselves and our community safe and healthy.

• We will be having only a single trumpeter at 5 & 10 PM, using instrument PPE, rather than the originally planned brass quintet.

• The 3 PM Children's Service will not include communion or candlelighting and will have an abbreviated timeframe.

• Following the lighting of candles during "Silent Night" please do not blow out your candle. You will keep it lit through the end of the service and place it in the sand-filled containers near the exit.

• We have 4 Christmas services, with 5 PM, also being livestreamed. Please use this variety to best suit you and your family's health concerns and comfort levels.

• Pastor Blake was exposed to COVID last week and Shai did test positive. Pastor Blake has been quarantined since Friday. He never had any symptoms and has received four negative tests; thus he will be able to lead Christmas services.

• If you have been exposed to COVID or have any symptoms please do not attend in-person services.

Director of Music Medical Leave Update: Donna Garzinsky will continue on medical leave into the new year as she recovers from surgery. We continue to hold her prayer. Wayne Dietterick has agreed to continue as interim choir director and principal organist. Linda Clark has agreed to continue as interim director of the handbell choir and recorder ensemble. We are extremely grateful to both Wayne and Linda for their willingness to serve during this time.
